Family Help: How To Help A Victim Of Abuse

It can be devastating for the whole family if a member had been a victim of abuse. It is hard to just forget what has transpired especially if it happened within the household. Each corner of the house can be a reminder of the unfortunate happening. It is very important that the whole family help the victim recover. The batterer is still family, however, he/she must learn the lesson and do his time. If any case that the batterer is not put to jail or under social, a distance must be kept between them for some time which can be achieved legally through a restraining order. The length of time within which contact is prohibited will depend on the gravity of the abuse.

It is important to provide unconditional love for the abused family member. Making him/her feel that you are there and you will stay no matter what will help him/her feel safer. If the victim is too young, you’ll need to adopt some parenting

that would be suited for your child. Ask for expert’s advice to better remove the traumatic experience from your child’s brain. Replace it with love and security. However, you must also be honest to your child and let him/her know what you can and can’t do for her to avoid misunderstandings. You must not let him/her feel that he/she is neglected. The feeling of being neglected or rejected can trigger certain issues to surface. Do not offer false hopes. Offer your help only if you will not get tired of him/her in times of crisis.
